Daman And Diu: My Beach-y And Least Crowded Getaway In Gujarat!
I had been stuck on a Daman and Diu trip fantasy for years now and when my sister finally agreed to accompany me to Gujarat this year, I was ecstatic. I got back from Daman and Diu only a week back and I am already missing its charming ambience.
A photography enthusiast friend I went to college with had shared some images he shot at Daman and Diu beaches last Christmas and looking at those serene beaches, I decided to make my next yearly Gujarat Pilgrim to its lesser known Gem. Well, the less crowded, the better!
We boarded an early morning flight to Baroda (from Delhi) and then travelled to Daman and Diu Gujarat through a private cab. There are no direct flights to Daman from Delhi but if you are travelling from Mumbai or closer cities, you will find easy options to get there. The drive spanned more than 300 kms from Baroda but it was surely worth it although, my tired sister slept all through the way. Being my usual self, of course, I asked our cab driver to stop every few kilometers. Well such is the beauty of the road, it just demands you to stop and stare so I couldn't help. The drive is probably not as dreamy as Goa-Mumbai one but it is serene, simple and as Indian as it gets. Overall, it took us 9 hours of total travel time to get there and given my little stops along the way to Daman, I find it pretty decent. There are flights taking only couple of hours and then further transportation from surrounding cities to Daman and Diu taking no more than 2-3 hours. So, if you are in no mood to enjoy some good old-fashioned Indian road trip, you can get there pretty fast.
Day 1: Daman
After browsing through Daman and Diu beach hotels websites for 4 hours, I had settled on one that offered in-house, home cooked meals. Because, Daman and Diu are fairly small, my sister was bent on the idea of hiring accommodation in one Daman and Diu 5 star hotels but I finally managed to convince her to stay at the homely ones. I guess I really like the nostalgic charm in strange cities, it's always something you can count on! Nevertheless, my little gamble on our stay turned out to work in my favor as our host ensured we got all the comforts. Hotels make me little uncomfortable especially when I am trying to unwind. It is as if there is no solidarity or the sense of nurturing to the vacation so such home-like stays are my rescue. It wasn't exactly a home-stay but a big resort built like a home-stay with really meek and polite host team and super-hospitable room service is just the thing I needed so far away from home.
When we got there, we were treated with some Delhi style warm tea that really shook all the exhaustion off. Then we got to our room that overlooked the bright ocean and slept for couple of hours and then went to explore the enclaves in late afternoon.
The first day, I just wanted to get out and kiss the sun and the ocean but Devka Beach really killed my expectations. I hadn't read anything about it so assumed it to be among Daman's big wonders. Although, our host politely tried to tell us that it was no use visiting the place unless we liked seafood, I went ahead anyway but thankfully, the Pomphret and Prawns substantiated my efforts. Devka Beach has a slight pungent smell and it certainly won't be my choice if I really wanted to kiss the sun.
Not more than 10 kms away, we hired an auto from Devka Beach to the Jampore Beach which indeed would be on my menu for kissing the sand, sun and the sea. It's not only less mainstream but also much more beautiful or perhaps, not being crowded and famous is what makes it so special among all Daman and Diu tourism places. Twist of time was that we reached there almost by sunset so our day one at Daman and Diu ended with my silly eyes appreciating the golden-pink lit sky and for someone who witnesses the daily struggle of Delhi's traffic, it was quite an escape.
Day 2: Diu
Daman and Diu are often mentioned together but Daman is really just a city while Diu is the Island.Daman and Diu Mumbai distance is not much so my sister had her day 3 itinerary planned for travelling out to Mumbai. The hints of Portuguese rule are still visible to the naked eye and you need not have a remarkable eye for arts to appreciate the beauty of this slightly European city and island. We started day 2 with some healthy Roti and Tea and got on our way to explore the city's Pargola Garden, Mirasol Lake among other Daman and Diu attractions. We aren't big on liquors so we skipped the drinking escapades and relied on some nice, warm, Indian Masala Chai all through our trip.
Daman and Diu culture is so beautifully entwined with certain remnants from the past that when you are at the island, it is really hard to believe that you are still in India. My sister, the wise traveler, wanted to have some us-time at the Pargola Garden which is indeed one of the best gardens of India and among the most lesser known marvels! So, we ended up spending hours in the garden doing nothing but walking around.
By afternoon, we checked out of our city stay and left for Diu. We got to the island by late afternoon and found our toes covered in sand at the Jalandhar Beach. I was recommended to give Nagoa Beach a miss if commercial beaches weren’t my thing but anyway I went there and loved the water sports to the fullest.
Majority of Daman and Diu historical places are at the Island so the next time I visit this place, I am covering the Island first for sure. The same night, we visited the Diu Jail which was a bit haunting but equal parts a beautiful experience. Back by midnight, we wrapped up our Day 2 with some seafood.
We had to travel to Mumbai from Diu the following morning so we couldn't make time for sightseeing in Diu but if you are planning a trip to this secret wonder of Gujarat, I'd suggest visiting the Island first.
